1ST ANNUAL GOOD MORNING GLOUCESTER HOLIDAY COOKIE CONTEST

When:  Thursday, December 3rd.  Entry turn in 4-5:30 pm, judging begins at 6:00.  No prior registration necessary
Where:  Browns Mall, 186 Main Street, Gloucester
Why:  Because we want to find the best cookies around, support the Open Door Food Pantry this holiday season and have fun with food at the same time in a contest that doesn’t involve giant burgers or fiery foods for a change.
Entry fee: $5.00 and two non perishable food items to be donated to the Open Door.

Your entries will be judged on the following criteria by qualified food professionals and local notables, all with excellent taste buds:

Taste 40%

Appearance (of cookies and overall presentation) 20%

Texture 20%

Overall Appeal of cookies 20%

Prizes will be awarded as follows:
1st place, individual entry
2nd place, individual entry
3rd place, individual entry

One 1st place prize for a youth/family entry.

The prizes will be fabulous and available for viewing when you drop off your entry–trust us on this one!

And now, the particulars:

You many decorate and garnish your entries with holiday flair as desired, 12 cookies per plate please.
You may enter as many different cookie submissions as you wish but you must pay an additional $5.00 and two more non perishable food items for the Open Door per entry.
No professional bakers/chefs allowed to enter please.
No mixes allowed.  All entries must be from scratch.
Three legible copies of recipe must accompany all entries. Please include name, address and telephone number on the back of each sheet.  These become the property of www.goodmorningloucester.com and may be reproduced.  If your recipe is not original (your personal creation), please attribute its origin.
Judging will begin promptly at 6:00 and will conclude when all entries have been judged.
You do not have to be present for announcement of the winners, but it will be more fun if you are.
The decisions of the judges are final.
Any unclaimed cookie entries will be packaged and donated to the Open Door the night of the event.

Please send me your gig write-ups with good size jpg posters as early in the week as possible. That way I can organize the info by days. Thanks so much for sharing your music!! And if you can send me Facebook/Myspace links to events or bands, I will post them as well.

Day 3 June 30, 2009 aboard the Spirit of Massachusetts

The foggy morning began with everyone dragging themselves out of bed. After only two days, everyone was very tired but still they had to get up. The first jobs were to scrub the decks, heads, soles, and eating surfaces. Soon the boat was looking clean and we were all very proud of our work.

After cleaning, it was time for breakfast which was assorted cereal, oatmeal, fruit muffins and Cream of Wheat. After eating, of course, the daily dish duty began. The crew quickly got to work. In a short time, they were all done. Next, it was time to clean our bunks. The adults had decided that some of our bunks were looking a little messy, the stuff not properly stowed. So, everyone had to go down to their bunk and neaten it up for an inspection by Mr. Tingle. Almost everyone passed and now it was time to move on to other activities.

The first of the day was to have an emergency drill. Everyone went to the helm to get the basics down. Then we all split up into our groups to learn what procedures we were in charge of. Then, to test it out, we tossed a buoy overboard and went through all of our procedures to rescue. After the safety was established it was time for lunch. Today’s lunch was a great meal of hot dogs, salad, chips, and a special treat of gummy Starbursts. Since its always time to go on a ship, as soon the meal was done it was right back to chores.

June 29, 2009 – Day 2 aboard the Spirit of Massachusetts

When the crew woke up upon day 2 of our voyage, everyone was disappointed by the arrival of rain. The morning began with the tedious job of lifting the 500 lb. anchor. The rain washed down on us and everyone on deck was ordered to wear the big and effective rain gear.

The first breakfast was definitely a good one made by cook Sara Renee. The simple but good pancakes could easily have many condiments added such as honey, jelly, syrup and butter. Also in this breakfast were some hearty sausages and cheesy eggs.

Soon the captain realized that the wind was not very strong at all and soon we had a plan to motor the ship as near as we could to George’s Island so we could have a little time ashore. When we got to shore by Zodiac, we were met by a park ranger named Ray. He gave us a tour of Fort Warren and told us a spooky ghost story called “The Lady in Black.” For all the crew who had previously been seasick, the brief land trip was definitely a good break. After the tour everyone was allowed to explore, play game or just talk. After a while of just chilling on land, the Zodiac arrived to carry us back to the ship.

Back on board, we had to continue our tasks and our chores. Once they were all done, it was finally time to climb the rigging. Excited, everyone donned their safety harness and one at a time began to climb backed up by an adult. From the top of the rigging, a beautiful sight lay beneath. One could look out over the harbor and down on the fort.

As the sun began to set, we all gathered mid-deck and created a story. This activity was run by Linda, and it was very funny to see how the plot changed as  he story passed from one person to the next.

After a full day’s work, everyone was tired and full from Sara Renee’s dinner of assorted meats, carrots, and potatoes. Finally, everyone collapsed in bed only to realize that in a couple of hours they would have to wake up for anchor watch.

Written by James M McKenna and illustrated by the Gloucester Council on Aging Senior Citizens in Juni Van Dyke’s arts program.

We will be celebrating the unveiling  of this brand new children’s book with a reception and a special book signing with an opportunity to meet the author and the illustrators.

We are very honored to have Mayor Carolyn Kirk provide us with the first official book reading, so please be sure to bring along the special children in your lives to share this momentous occassion!

Proceeds benefit the O’Maley school community and the Make A Wish Foundation.

Celebrate the culture of the British Isles and try out a few traditional dances with the Celtic Bells at this free performance for all ages.

The Celtic Bells are Jerry and Nancy Bell with their children, Calum and Katriona. Together they play and dance everything from the traditional Scottish Highland Fling, Irish jigs and step dances, to bagpipe tunes and favorite Irish songs.

The performance will include spirited sets on pennywhistle, flute, bones, Irish drum, and a work song in the Gaelic language. As storytelling is very much a part of the Celtic tradition, Nancy will relate a wonderful story about the boy who couldn’t play the fiddle, with young Calum taking center stage.
